Our client is a technology company delivering advanced software engineering and quality engineering services for complex, real-world systems. Their work combines backend, embedded, cloud, on-premise, and edge technologies, with a strong focus on video, security, IoT, and mission-critical applications.

The company works on products where reliability, performance, and operational stability matter — including video recording and management platforms, alarm and security systems, video analytics, and connected device ecosystems. This creates an opportunity to join a technically ambitious project that goes beyond standard web development and involves distributed systems, media processing, edge deployments, and production-grade engineering.

About the Role

Our client is building a new development and testing team of approximately 10 people to take an integrated video monitoring capability from proof-of-concept stage to a fully developed, production-ready product.

We are looking for a Senior Backend Engineer with strong distributed systems experience to join this team and take ownership of critical edge-deployed services. The role focuses on backend components responsible for recording, media relay, multi-node coordination, health monitoring, and event delivery into downstream alarm and monitoring systems.

This is a hands-on senior engineering role for someone who can design, implement, debug, and ship production services end to end, while also contributing to technical decision-making and mentoring other engineers within the team.

Key Responsibilities

  • Own one or more backend services within the edge stack, such as recording, media relay, event bridge, or panel-side integrations.
  • Design, build, and harden multi-node coordination mechanisms, including time-source ownership, recording handover, peer health detection, and service recovery flows.
  • Develop reliable event delivery into downstream alarm, monitoring, and integration systems.
  • Investigate complex production issues, including service restarts, goroutine leaks, memory growth, race conditions, and degraded edge-node behavior.
  • Use Linux operational tooling such as systemd, journalctl, cgroups, /proc, SSH, package managers, coredumps, and profiling tools to diagnose and resolve issues.
  • Analyze Go runtime behavior using tools such as pprof, race detector, goroutine dumps, memory profiles, and atomic/concurrency primitives.
  • Design and implement observability and health surfaces, including /health endpoints, structured logs, metrics, and operational diagnostics.
  • Review pull requests with a focus on reliability, maintainability, testing, and Go best practices.
  • Mentor other engineers on Go idioms, error handling, concurrency patterns, testing, and production-readiness.
  • Participate in canary deployments, feature-flagged releases, rollback planning, and edge-side incident support.

Requirements

  • 5+ years of professional experience building production backend services in Go or a comparable systems language such as Rust, C, or C++.
  • Strong hands-on experience with distributed systems and real-world failure modes, especially in environments with multiple nodes, unreliable networks, and edge deployments.
  • Solid understanding of Go concurrency primitives, including goroutines, channels, sync/atomic, context.Context, race detection, and memory profiling.
  • Strong Linux service operations skills, including systemd, journalctl, cgroups, /proc, SSH, logs, package management, and production troubleshooting.
  • Good understanding of databases, especially PostgreSQL and MySQL, including schema migrations, transactions, query plans, and performance considerations.
  • Experience designing production-grade APIs, health checks, logs, metrics, and diagnostic tooling.
  • Ability to debug difficult issues from logs, profiles, dumps, traces, and imperfect production signals.
  • Strong testing mindset, especially when fixing distributed-systems bugs or concurrency issues.
  • Ability to work independently and take ownership of a service from design through implementation, deployment, and production support.
  • Good communication skills and a collaborative approach to technical problem-solving.

Nice to Have

  • Previous experience in video, surveillance, live streaming, broadcast, media processing, or related domains.
  • Understanding of media protocols such as RTSP, RTMP, WebRTC, or similar technologies.
  • Hands-on experience with libraries and frameworks such as Pion, gortsplib, GStreamer, FFmpeg, or similar media stacks.
  • Experience building or operating video pipelines, recording systems, stream relays, or real-time media services.
  • Experience with security mechanisms such as HMAC, JWT, OAuth, signing, token validation, and secure service-to-service communication.
  • Experience shipping features behind feature flags, running canary deployments, and performing controlled rollbacks.
  • Familiarity with embedded, edge, IoT, alarm, access control, or physical security systems.
